how to create a home meditation space

Whether you plan to use it for meditation, yoga, prayer or simply to read or write poetry, a special space to restore serenity or explore spirituality can be highly restorative. We are all in some sense spiritual beings seeking meaning in our lives, even if we’re not part of a religious or spiritual tradition. A dedicated space to express this search will enhance the experience. Here are some suggestions for creating your own, ideal sacred space.

DE-CLUTTER

Your outer environment impacts on your inner landscape. Make it clean and serene by removing everything that will distract your attention.  That includes piles of magazines, dirty cups or cutlery, paperwork, excess ornaments and bulky furniture. Your space should make you feel calm just by walking into it.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPOT TO MEDITATE

Decide how you want to feel in your space, you might want a small space to feel cosy or an expansive space to feel limitless. If you are using it for yoga, see if there’s enough space for a mat.

QUIETEN YOUR SPACE

Check for noises that might throw you off. Be aware that it’s not, for instance, next to a lawn that gets mowed during the time you want to be there.

CHOOSE NATURAL LIGHT

See what kind of light you want and where the sun comes in. You can use candles or lamps to light it how you want.

CREATE A SANCTUARY

You can use candles or lamps to light it how you want.If your room has sharp angles or is an awkward shape it might not feel peaceful. Check the flow and harmony of the area.

REMOVE DISTRACTIONS

Make sure you are able to have privacy – if it’s somewhere that invites interruptions make a big ‘do not disturb’ sign.

BE COMFORTABLE WHILE MEDITATING

Being still can bring down your temperature. See that you have adequate heating or cooling so you can be at your most comfortable.

COLOUR YOUR MOOD

Decide whether you want neutral colours or if brighter colours inspire you more.

ADD MEDITATION SOUNDS

Choose unintrusive relaxing sounds. Natural sounds like water flowing or birdsong might suit you or find zen type music from sites like:  www.soundstrue.com; www.gaiam.com/meditation-cd; www.omharmonics.com; www.meditationoasis.com/store/guided-meditation-cds.php.

DECORATE YOUR SPACE

Here are some props that might work well:

Yoga mat, candles, incense, aroma burner, meditation cushion, spiritual figurines from leaders who inspire you, notebook, vase, altar, flowers, Tibetan bell, singing bowl, fountain, prayer flags, mini water feature, wind chimes, calming photos or images, wisdom cards, talismans, rune stones, crystals, feathers, space cleansing herbs.
